GAME PHOTOS: Wieland’s No-Hitter

Thanks to the San Antonio Missions for providing us with these pics from Wieland’s no-hitter.  -AG

AUDIO: Joe Wieland’s No-Hitter

You never know what you might see at the ballpark.  Friday night we saw a no-hitter tossed by a 21-year-old in his seventh ever Double-A start, against a team with the best record in all of minor league baseball.

You can listen to the final three outs here.  Plus, hear my conversation with Joe less than an hour after it all happened.

You could tell last night that Joe was in charge – it was just one of those nights.  He told me afterwards that he felt like his arm was fresh and that he could still be pitching hours after it was over.  We’ll never know, but it would’ve been fun to see how many more he could have sat down without allowing a hit.

Joe was much cooler than me last night.  In the bottom of the eighth inning both of my hands started to go numb, and they were still tingling minutes after I was off-air.  Trust me, not a common occurrence.

It goes down as the fourth no-hitter in franchise history.  It’s the first nine-inning complete-game no-hitter in Frisco history.  The other ‘Riders no-hitters:

July 28, 2005: A.J. Murray, Steve Karsay, and Scott Feldman combine to pitch a perfect game in Corpus Christi. The final score was 3-0 and it marked the first no-hitter in the three-year history of the franchise.

May 18, 2008: Matt Harrison throws the first ever no-hitter at Dr Pepper Ballpark in a seven-inning game.

April 19, 2011: Martin Perez tosses a rain-shortened perfect game in North Little Rock, Ark. against the Travelers as the ‘Riders won 1-0.

Thank you to Joe, catcher Elio Sarmiento, and the rest of the defense for a game I’ll never forget.  Who knows what we might see tonight?

Wieland’s No-Hitter On Twitter

Frisco starter Joe Wieland is on Twitter (@JWieland108, for those who want to follow him). So, it is fitting that our Twitter feed blew up after the right-hander became the first RoughRider to pitch a nine-inning no-hitter by himself.

Here is how it unfolded from the game’s early stages until the end on Twitter. If you tweeted at us before 10:20 tonight, you are on this list. When I say “RT” at the end of a tweet, that means that the person retweeted some of our information.

This includes our tweets, and it begins at the beginning of the game. It does not, however, include our straight re-tweets, which totaled 47 by 10:20 p.m.
