Magic Number: 10
After a day off, the ‘Riders opened an eight-game homestand Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to the San Antonio Missions. Frisco is now 0-2 in the month of June. Click here to read the full game recap.
The Missions threw down the gauntlet with the win and upped the pressure on the RoughRiders to lock up a first-half playoff berth. San Antonio (30-27) know lurks 3 1/2 games behind the RoughRiders (33-23) in south division standings with three games remaining in the series.
To calculate the Magic Number, determine the number of games yet to be played (13), add one (13+1=14), and subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings from the closest opponent (14-4=10).
In case you missed it: Were it not for a RoughRiders’ run in the ninth, the Missions would have blanked Frisco for the second consecutive meeting. The run broke a stretch of 22 innings without a tally against the Padres’ Double-A affiliate. San Antonio shut-out the ‘Riders on May 19 with big league rehabber Casey Kelly on the mound for six innings. It’s the only game in which Frisco has failed to score this season.
Frisco hit into three double plays on Tuesday, including one in each of the first two innings. A lineout double play in the second extended a stretch of four straight frames with a twin killing by the RoughRiders’ offense, a streak that reached back to the series finale with Springfield on June 1. The ‘Riders have ground into a double play in four straight games and nine of the past eleven contests.
Star of the Game: LF Teodoro Martinez – 2/4, RBI
Cafe started the night 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He also hit into an inning-ending double play. But the righty reached base with a pair of singles in the final two frames as Frisco attempted to rally and avoid a shutout.
After a single in the eighth, Teo drove in the RoughRiders’ only run of the game on a two-out liner in the ninth. The Venezuelan has 33 hits in 30 games for the ‘Riders (.306 batting average) with 13 RBI.
Enjoy the highlights, and thanks for tuning in.
