An error and two hit batsman dinged the RoughRiders and proved costly in their bid to win three straight against San Antonio and take the series. Click here to read the full game recap.
The Missions took the lead permanently in the fourth inning on a fielding error by Guilder Rodriguez. On a ground ball hit by Austin Hedges to short, G-Rod unleashed a short throw to first. J.T. Wise, playing the position for the first time as a RoughRider, could not scoop the ball out of the dirt. While the toss over was certainly not the strongest from Rodriguez, it’s still a play Wise needs to make.
Later, when Cody Overbeck grounded back to the pitcher, the out should have been the inning’s last, but the play instead drove in a run for the first of three unearned tallies in the frame by the Missions.
After Claudio exited, Frisco’s two relievers struggled with wildness that hurt the team’s ninth-inning comeback bid. Francisco Mendoza hit the first batter he faced in the sixth inning and walked the next two to load the bases with nobody out. To Mendoza’s credit, he pulled through via a double play and a strikeout to end the inning with only one run allowed, the best possible scenario given the circumstances. However, on the 6-3 twin killing, Yeison Asencio, the player struck by Mendoza’s pitch, scored.
A hit batsmen plagued Erik Hamren as well, the RoughRiders’ arm in the eighth. Rymer Liriano was forced to leave the game after absorbing a shot to the elbow. The pinch runner for Liriano, Hunter Renfroe, scored all the same on a triple by Brian Bixler. In a game the ‘Riders lost by one run, the three unearned runs and the two additional runs that initially reached by way of a hit-by-pitch sank Frisco into too deep a hole.
Star of the Game: 2B Odubel Herrera – 3/4, R
Anyone holding his or her figurative breath in anticipation of a fall-off in Odubel’s offensive production has been doing so for quite a while now. The second baseman singled all over the place on Tuesday – once to right, once to left and once on the infield. His .342 batting average (68-for-199 through 53 games) is tops on the team.
In case you missed it:
-The RoughRiders are now 0-33 when they trail after eight innings. They came close to breaking that streak on Tuesday afternoon, but couldn’t quite finish the job.
-Frisco also falls to 9-9 in day games this season. The team plays one more game under the sun on August 24 in Midland.
-As is his custom, San Antonio field manager Rich Dauer shuffled his lineup defensively during the game. In the seventh inning, Cory Spangenberg moved from center field to his more regular spot at second base. Casey McElroy then shifted from second to third and kicked Adam Buschini across the diamond from third to first. Cody Overbeck, who started the game at first, was replaced in the batting order by new center fielder Rymer Liriano, whose presence in the game was short-lived. After Liriano left the game with an injury in the eighth, Hunter Renfroe became the third center fielder of the ballgame for San Antonio.
-Frisco outhit the Missions 10-8 in the loss.
-Major league rehabber Geovany Soto had another good game and went 2-for-4 with a double as the DH. After his leadoff double in the ninth, Drew Robinson replaced Soto as a pinch runner and later scored on Chris Grayson’s two-run double. Fellow rehabber Jim Adduci was not in the lineup on Tuesday.
-Gallo watch: 0-for-4, 2SO
Playing in his first game with the ‘Riders since July 10, Gallo hit the ball out of the infield once on a fly out to left in the sixth.
Catcher Geovany Soto has been enjoying his time with the RoughRiders in the Texas League circuit and it shows in the numbers: 7-for-19 (.368) with four runs, two doubles and an RBI through six games. The 2008 National League Rookie of the Year also shares memories of his trip to the MLB All-Star Game in 2008:
