Magic Number 10

It may be hard for some to believe, but the 2012 season will be year number 10 for the RoughRiders franchise. Current Rangers like Ian Kinsler, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and Derek Holland all came through Dr Pepper Ballpark.  Heck, even Josh Hamilton has rehabbed here twice and, most recently, hit a home run.

It’s fun to reflect over the last nine years and think about all the great ballplayers ‘Riders fans have had the pleasure to watch. With that in mind, I’ve teamed up with the Michael Damman, the RoughRiders’ Director of Statistical Research,  to come up with the All-‘Riders Team.  In the coming weeks here on the blog, we’ll be profiling the best players at their positions in franchise history.  Should be a lot of fun.

Here are some news, notes, and headlines from today:

  • Arkansas Travelers’ third baseman Luis Jiminez has been added to the Angels’ 40-man roster.  He batted .290/.335/.486 with 18 homers in 490 at-bats for Arkansas in 2011, and he led the Texas League with 40 doubles, was second with 94 RBIs, and third with 59 extra-base hits.
  • Here’s a first:  according to ballparkdigest.com, the Seattle Mariners are installing four electric vehicle charging stations available for public use at Safeco Field.  Each is capable of fully re-charging a vehicle battery in two-to-six hours. Anyone can plug into the charging stations 24 hours a day, even on days when the Mariners are not playing.
  • As reported late last month, our neighboring Fort Worth Cats of the independent American Association have had their league membership revoked after failing to put up a required letter of credit for 2012.  Team owner Carl Bell says he’s selling the team to potential new owners who would field a team next season.
  • According to a tweet I saw a couple of days ago by my good friend Jason Cole, the publisher of LoneStarDugout.com, former RoughRiders’ reliever Evan Reed has been throwing in the upper 90s in the Arizona Fall League.  The ‘Riders were taking batting practice in Midland in 2010 when we got the news that Evan had been traded to the Florida Marlins for Jorge Cantu.  Evan is a great guy who I really enjoyed getting to know.  I once ate lunch with him at a Subway in Corpus Christi and was amazed by the amount of food he could pound.  Evan ate a 12″ sandwich on thick honey oat bread with four chicken breasts and almost all the veggies available.  Happy to hear that he’s doing well.

RoughRiders Potpourri

Yesterday, the ‘Riders Insider Blog took a rare day off. We’re back at it today with a few odds and ends, spanning everywhere from Martin Perez to whiffle ball. Here are a few wide-ranging Frisco Facts for this Thursday, the beginning of a six-game road trip to Springfield and Arkansas.

FRISCO FACTS:

  • We’ve been asked a few times, so I figured I would touch on it first here. Frisco starter Martin Perez is not scheduled to pitch again for the RoughRiders before the XM Futures Game this Sunday. His turn in the rotation would be Saturday, but Perez will skip that start in order to perform for the World Team in the event at Chase Field, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
  • As for who that starter will be, we don’t know yet. It is the very familiar talent, “TBA.” However, two good guesses would be former members of the rotation–Richard Bleier and Jake Brigham. Both have excelled at certain points as starters here in 2011.
  • Tough news out of Arlington over the last day or so. Brandon Webb is likely done for the season, that according to multiple outlets. Webb made four starts for the ‘Riders and went 0-2 with a 9.75 earned run average in 12 innings.
  • I don’t know about all of you, but I really feel for the former Cy Young Award winner. He clearly didn’t have the stuff he did when he was consistently posting 200-inning seasons with the Diamondbacks. However, he worked very hard to return to the big leagues, and he couldn’t have been a nicer person during his time with Frisco. Whether it is with the Rangers or someone else, I sincerely hope we see Webb pitch again somewhere.
  • Be sure to check out the Reebok 2011 Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game this Saturday at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The Larry O’Brien trophy will be there, as will many celebrities. David Archuleta, Aaron’s favorite singer, will be on hand to sing “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch. Here are the details for the event, which begins at 3 p.m. and will run until well after the sun goes down.
  • I had a chance to go to the Rangers-Orioles game last night. It was my first full game in Arlington, and I really enjoyed the park. Everyone was very friendly, except for one fan screaming “Good Job Pie” at poor O’s left fielder Felix Pie (although it was all in good fun–I enjoyed it at least). I loved the area in center field where kids can play some whiffle ball and hit home runs off a tee. It took me back to my little league “glory” days, and I wanted to join in the fun (I didn’t, by the way).
  • The second version of the “RoughRiders Roundtable” podcast will be out in the next 24 hours or so. We had great results and feedback from the first one, so check it out. You can access that podcast here when it is available. Joining me will be Aaron and Jason Cole of LoneStarDugout.com. The topics include Topps Texas League Player of the Month Tommy Mendonca, Mike Bianucci, Renny Osuna, all-you-can-eat buffets and so much more.

The ‘Riders and Cardinals open up a three-game series tonight at Hammons Field. Join us on the pre-game coverage along the RBN at 6:37. Enjoy!

Rangers Minor League News, Nov. 12

The Rangers have made some moves that you, a RoughRiders fan, will be interested to know about.  First of all, SS Guilder Rodriguez has been resigned by the Rangers. Even though he’s Guilder_Blog_175.jpgolder, I’m glad he’ll be back in the system and couldn’t be happier for the season Guilder had in 2010.  The 27-year-old earned his first ever promotion to Triple-A and hopefully, for his sake, will begin 2011 there as well.  Good for Guilder.

Remember stout right-hander Chris Mobley?  Under six feet tall, signed from an independent league after pitching 2009 in Triple-A New Orleans and, like Rodriguez, he’s 27-years-old.  Despite the previous handcuffs, Mobley performed well overall for the ‘Riders last year and has been re-signed by the Rangers.  Good fastball and slider.

Mobley_Throw_175.jpg

Funny quip about Mobley: His name is pronounced MOB-lee, not MOE-blee.  He once told me that he’s so used to people mispronouncing his name that it doesn’t bother him at all anymore.  He said it also doesn’t bother his dad.  Interestingly enough, it’s his mom who gets most upset when his name is mispronounced and, as Chris said, “it’s not even originally her name.”

Other Notes:
The Rangers signed C Kevin Cash to a minor league contract.  He’s 32-years-old and has spent time in Triple-A and the bigs with both the Astros and Red Sox.  Keep in mind that former ‘Riders Kevin Richardson and Emerson Frostad (who has done some catching) are six-year free agents and could leave the Rangers organization.
Thanks to Jason Cole of lonestardugout.com for keeping us up to speed with the Rangers system during the off-season.  Jason is the best when it comes to getting the inside scoop about the club’s minor league prospects.  I highly recommended bookmarking his site and subscribing.
The ‘Riders 2011 season opens up on April 7th vs. the Springfield Cardinals.  The Cards opened up 2010 in Frisco as well.  Blake Beavan got the start and the win (no surprise there).  Set your calenders.
