The 2013 (Nearly) Complete Twitter Guide to the Frisco RoughRiders, the Texas League and the Texas Rangers Farm System: Part One
A couple days ago I wrote a post here with the best resources for keeping up on the Texas Rangers and its minor league teams and prospects, and the entire time while writing it, I kept thinking about how I get as much or more information on Twitter these days.
I still hit the ‘ole feedly reader every day. Sometimes 140 characters just doesn’t really cut it for a topic. Yu know, like Darvish’s outing last night. (For more on that, read this, and this, and this and this. Oh and you have to watch that).
And while that is true, Twitter is still great, especially for breaking news. Want to be the first one to find out that Nelson Cruz’s home run last night actually came with a broken-bat swing? FSSW’s Emily Jones has you covered:
Just confirmed Nelson Cruz broke his bat on that homerun. #beastmode
— Emily Jones (@EmilyJonesFSN) April 25, 2013
Did you see former RoughRiders pitcher Robbie Erlin got called yetserday? With Twitter, you could find great stuff on who is behind the numbers from excellent Rangers prospect guru Jason Cole:
Free @baseballpro – The “Call-Up” piece on new #Padres LHP Robbie Erlin, including his outstanding video interview. bit.ly/14R5vWQ
— Jason Cole (@LoneStarDugout) April 25, 2013
And, yeah, you might have heard that 17-year-old Rangers prospect Nomar Mazara hit his second home run last night for Class-A Hickory, but how impressive was it? Crawdads’ broadcaster Aaron Cox does a very nice job tweeting in-game. See:
17 year old Nomar Mazara with a towering solo homer over the video board and clock in Greensboro to give the #Crawdads an early 1-0 lead.

SO, without further ado, here it is: The 2013 (Nearly) Complete Guide to the Frisco RoughRiders, the Texas League, and the Texas Rangers Farm System.
Why “nearly” complete? Well. 1) this is not necessarily exhaustive. Plenty of people tweet about these topics, but this is a great starting point. And 2) of course we need your input! Let us know who we are missing by commenting below or tweeting at me (@NathanSBarnett) and 3) I am not done with the rest of the parts yet…
And, yes, this is just Part One of The 2013 (Nearly) Complete Twitter Guide (TNCTG). I will have a few entries over the next week or so and also update them, as I find new handles worthy of the all-important “follow” click.
Part One looks at the teams and key employee follows in the Texas League and Rangers system. Future entries will include key journalists, commentators, and bloggers to follow. And players! Yes, the exhaustive list of players as well. Stay tuned!

In-Depth Playoff Coverage
It’s playoff time for the RoughRiders, which means it is time for the Insider Blog to bring its “A” game. Whether the ‘Riders’ run lasts through this weekend or all the way to the Texas League championship, we will have you covered in many ways.
Obviously, you’ll be able to follow the journey via game recaps on the ‘Riders’ website and the play-by-play action both online and on 1630 KKGM. Still, here are some other ways, some new and some enhanced, to connect with the ‘Riders.
Game Previews: For every game of the playoffs, we will post a game preview here on the Insider Blog. You will also be able to access the preview at ridersbaseball.com.
Playoff Perspective: Shortly after each game, we will break down the night’s showdown and talk about how it affects the RoughRiders’ series. More on this in a moment.
Extra Bases Chat: Aaron and I will be chatting with all you RoughRiders’ fans throughout the entire broadcast. Join us to discuss EVERY playoff game, both home and road. This is where your voice can be heard.
Twitter/Facebook: Your instant sources for RoughRiders’ information. Even more updates and links will be offered throughout the postseason.
Now, let’s give you an idea of our post-game feature. Here’s the “Playoff Perspective – Off Day Edition.”
- Carlos Pimentel will start Game 3 for the ‘Riders against San Antonio righty Casey Kelly. Pimentel doesn’t have awesome numbers overall, but he has had success against the Missions all year long. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.97 ERA against San Antonio.
- The RoughRiders were just 13-19 against San Antonio this year, but they did take three of four from minor league baseball’s best team August 23-26. It was the two clubs’ final regular season meeting, and it took place at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
- Proof that this series should be a low-scoring affair: Frisco’s team average against San Antonio is .240 and its ERA is 3.97. San Antonio’s marks are .237 and 3.14.
- Frisco will hope to reverse a recent trend. In both 2009 and 2010, the Texas League squad with the best regular season record went on to win the championship. Northwest Arkansas went 6-3 in its quest last season. Midland went 6-2 for the ’09 crown.
- Reason #29173 why minor league baseball is great: Robbie Ross and Joe Wieland, two very close friends who will be opponents on the mound in Game 1 of this series, had some fun with each other on Twitter. Ross on Wieland: “Dude that’s if Joe can keep it under control haha. No man it will be fun.” Wieland on Ross: “I’m gonna have to show him how its done.” If this were CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander going back and forth, people would be criticizing like crazy. Sports are supposed to be fun, and it will be a fun Game 1 matchup.
- For the first time in a long time, the ‘Riders and Missions are equal–at 0-0. It’s a race to 3. Enjoy the show.

‘Riders Fans Bombard Twitter
Over the weekend, our Twitter page reached 3,000 followers, which is an awesome accomplishment that is very worthy of a big thank you. By the way, lucky follower #3,000 is @tex198.
Still, this is an opportunity for us to reach out and acknowledge some of our Twitter followers in a few different categories. First, how about some of the ones who mention us a lot on Twitter?
@VisitFrisco: They almost always mention upcoming home stands at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
@BLAKIEJ_BAM: A visitor to Dr Pepper Ballpark and a viewer of the ‘Riders on TXA 21.
@tiffanytilyard: Pretty much the same.
@armenontheair: He was the star of this show, that’s for sure.
@andylonghorn: Tweets and pictures to us, which is a great behind-the-scenes look.
@TexasRangers_HQ: We are a consistent “Follow Friday” account from this Twitter-er.
But hey, this is a thank you to every RoughRiders follower, not just the most vocal ones. How about we go through and see some of the most unique followers. These made the cut:
@DrAwesomeberry: A guy with this Twitter handle needs more than 14 followers, that’s for sure.
@DallasCowShirts: His mission: “We steal shirts from cows for YOU!” Obviously.
@LauraHiccups: That’s not her last name, according to her account. Still, a great account name.
@DrCrankinstein: We have plenty of well-qualified doctors following the RoughRiders.
@waxo1: The best bio of our followers: “A nice guy.” And that only takes 11 characters.
@KitKat_Fanatic: They are delicious, after all.
@rottenredneck17: Fair enough.
@Beercycler: “Trying to combine running, cycling, and great beers from around the world.” Sounds like a challenge, but I wish him well.
@JCUStreaks10: He has “giggidy” in his description. That’s enough for me.
@Biggios_Helmet: Craig Biggio’s helmet was quite memorable, so why not get a Twitter account for it?
@CanadianWaffles: I’ve never had one. Sounds delicious.
@ihatesaladforks: Who doesn’t?
@octopusfan: Unfortunately, this diehard octopus fan has only come up with two tweets so far.
@abusedsquirrel: On this note, we better stop.
Thanks to everyone who is a part of our Twitter feed. We hope you enjoy all of our content. Looking forward to getting to 4,000 soon!

Wieland’s No-Hitter On Twitter
Frisco starter Joe Wieland is on Twitter (@JWieland108, for those who want to follow him). So, it is fitting that our Twitter feed blew up after the right-hander became the first RoughRider to pitch a nine-inning no-hitter by himself.
Here is how it unfolded from the game’s early stages until the end on Twitter. If you tweeted at us before 10:20 tonight, you are on this list. When I say “RT” at the end of a tweet, that means that the person retweeted some of our information.
This includes our tweets, and it begins at the beginning of the game. It does not, however, include our straight re-tweets, which totaled 47 by 10:20 p.m.
